Guide 01

Net Metering, Explained Simply

Your rooftop solar feeds the grid during the day and draws from it at night. A bi-directional meter keeps score — you pay only for the net units you consume.

Bi-directional meter: Records both import and export seamlessly.
Net settlement: Bill = imported units − exported units.
DisCOM approval: Your installer files the application; you get the meter.
TOD tariffs: Some states pay more for midday export — a bonus.

The net-metering maths

Solar exports during the day800 kWh @ ₹4.5
Grid imports at night500 kWh @ ₹6.8
Net payable₹3,400

Illustrative — rates vary by state and tariff plan.

Guide 02

How to Pick the Right Solar Panel

Four things matter more than the brand sticker: cell technology, efficiency, temperature coefficient and the fine print of the warranty.

01

Cell technology

TOPCon leads on efficiency and degradation; Mono-PERC is proven and value-priced; bifacial adds rear-side gain.

02

Efficiency & wattage

Higher efficiency means more power per square metre of roof — critical when space is tight.

03

Temperature coefficient

A lower %/°C means the panel suffers less in India’s heat — check it on the datasheet.

04

Warranty fine print

Look for 25-year linear output warranty AND a product warranty that actually covers workmanship.

Guide 03

Financing and Subsidy in One Page

Most rooftop systems can be installed with almost nothing down. Here’s the money picture for 2026.

PM Surya Ghar

Central subsidy up to ₹78,000 for eligible residential rooftops up to 10 kW — paid directly to your bank.

Bank EMI plans

Solar loans at 7–10% with tenures up to 10 years; many installers offer zero-down schemes.

Captive & open access

Businesses can use group-captive structures to cut power costs 25–40% without capex.

Guides 04–06

Sizing, upkeep and picking a partner

Three fast reads that save money and headaches.

Sizing your system

  • Average daily units × 1.5 ≈ array kWh needed
  • 1 kW ≈ 120–150 sq ft of shadow-free roof
  • Size the inverter 1.1–1.3× array for headroom

Keeping it healthy

  • Clean panels 2–6× a year depending on dust
  • Watch for sudden generation dips in the app
  • Service inverters every 12 months

Vetting an EPC

  • Ask for 3 reference sites you can call
  • Compare on €/kWp, not headline price
  • Insist on payment linked to milestones
